Elon names Patrick Noltemeyer as chief of staff

Noltemeyer comes to Elon from Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, where he has served as special assistant to the president and chief planning officer.

Patrick Noltemeyer has been named chief of staff and secretary to the Board of Trustees at Elon University following a national search. He will begin his new duties March 1.

In his new role, Noltemeyer will serve as principal professional aide to President Connie Ledoux Book. He will coordinate and supervise operations of the Office of the President, manage presidential communications and support the meetings and activities of the Board of Trustees, along with other duties.

Noltemeyer succeeds Jeff Stein, who joined the Office of the President in 2010 and has served as associate vice president and chief of staff since 2012. Stein will provide support during the transition and beginning June 1 will assume full duties as vice president for strategic initiatives. In addition to his current responsibilities as co-chair of Elon’s 2030 Strategic Planning Committee, Stein will provide ongoing support for the efforts adopted in the upcoming plan. He will also support special projects and partnerships between the university and local and regional governments and organizations.

Noltemeyer comes to Elon from Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, where he most recently has served as chief planning officer and special assistant to the president for institutional research and special events. A 2001 graduate of Centre, he has a master of education degree from the University of Kentucky and a doctorate in education from the University of Louisville.

As chief planning officer at Centre since 2015, Noltemeyer has played an instrumental role in creation of a 20-year plan for the development of Centre’s physical campus, bringing together a variety of stakeholders to help map out the college’s future. Noltemeyer was also involved in Centre’s reaffirmation of accreditation process through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

He served as co-chair for Centre’s Bicentennial Committee, which was charged with planning and executing the college’s 200 anniversary celebration, and he was involved in the planning and execution of the 2012 U.S. Vice Presidential Debate held on the Centre campus.

Noltemeyer joined Centre’s Office of the President in 2013 after serving as associate dean and director of community service and the Bonner Program in the student life office. As special assistant, Noltemeyer established measures of institutional effectiveness, reported institutional data to a variety of organizations as well as coordinated special events for the president’s office and the Board of Trustees.

Noltemeyer began his tenure at Centre as director of Greek life in July 2003. He previously worked in student life positions at Georgetown (Kentucky) College and the University of Kentucky.

Noltemeyer has been active in the broader Danville community, with volunteer leadership roles with organizations including the Heart of Kentucky United Way, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Wilderness Trace Child Development Center. In 2018, he received the Rising Star Award from the Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce.

Noltemeyer is joined in the move to Elon by his wife, Megan, and their two sons, Jackson and Marshall.
