Workshop focuses on 'How Students' Non-Academic Writing Supports Their Academic Writing'

Professor Paula Rosinski and Assistant Professor Heather Lindenman led a faculty/staff workshop on the personal, professional and civic writing in which Elon students engage and how we might integrate what students learn from this kind of writing into our classrooms.

On Monday, March 4, Professor Paula Rosinski and Assistant Professor Heather Lindenman led a faculty/staff Center for Writing Excellence workshop on their study "How Students' Non-Academic Writing Supports Their Academic Writing."

As part of Elon's Writing Excellence Initiative, they collected survey responses from 138 Elon students about the kinds of writing they most frequently do in personal, professional, and extracurricular contexts.  Some of the documents students reported writing most frequently include emails, social media posts, proposals, text messages, presentations or speeches, and posters/flyers. 

After sharing conclusions from the data, including what students report learning from their non-academic writing, Rosinski and Lindenman led a discussion about how faculty and staff might leverage what students learn from their non-academic writing in their interactions with students and the classes they teach.
