Mathematics faculty present at conference

Several faculty from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics recently presented at the annual meeting of the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics in Greensboro, N.C., Oct. 27-28.

Assistant Professor Karen Yokley, and Senior Lecturer Jan Mays presented a session on how the dynamic mathematics software GeoGebra can be used to facilitate constructions in geometry, modeling in algebra, and development of enrichment activities.

Associate Professor Janice Richardson and Brenda Hopper (UNC-Asheville) facilitated a panel of early career teachers as they discussed their first few years of teaching, growth as a teacher leader, and moving to the common core standards. Former Elon students Amanda Ketner ’11 and Hilary Sheets Bowers ’09 were panel members.

Assistant Professor Chad Awtrey detailed aspects of his ongoing SoTL project, which aims to measure the effects of a writing-to-learn pedagogy on students’ achievement and affect in first semester calculus (MTH 121).

Associate Professor Alan Russell led four 90-minute workshops focusing on origami use in the mathematics classroom. The four workshops offered grade-level specific investigations for K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and secondary classrooms.
