Elon University has developed a new website and community resource for the 2012 fall election season.

The “Elon in 2012” website – www.elon.edu/elon2012 – shares information on cultural and student programs; lists of faculty experts with expertise in studying politics or political media; links to student organizations whose missions include a significant component of civic education; and profiles of several students who will be attending the Republican and Democratic national conventions.

TurboVote, a project of nonpartisan, nonprofit Democracy Works, is prominently featured on the page to assist anyone with an Elon University email address in registering and then voting absentee in their home states.

The site also links to many of the university’s centers or affiliated programs that engage students and faculty in the democratic process, including the Elon University Poll, the National Campaign for Political & Civic Engagement, and The Washington Center.

As staff with The Pendulum newspaper and the Elon Local News broadcast news organization return to campus, a section of the website will be developed to showcase the work student journalists do to inform their peers of the issues and forces shaping their lives.

In addition to ongoing political coverage by student media, and because of the university’s proximity to Charlotte, N.C., a page also will be created in the weeks ahead to showcase multimedia reporting on the Democratic National Convention that School of Communications students are doing in partnership with Creative Loafing, the largest alternative weekly newspaper and online news organization in the Queen City.

New events and features will be added to the website throughout the fall as student groups and faculty organize events and initiatives related to the elections. For more information, or to suggest content to be added to “Elon in 2012,” contact Eric Townsend in the Office of University Communications at (336) 278-7413.

Faculty members are also encouraged to contact University Communications should they have interest in speaking with media about issues related to the fall elections.
