Elon University’s Premier Sport & Event Society assisted with a golf tournament in October that netted the group $3,500 for a scholarship fund in the Department of Sport & Event Management.

The SAS Champions Tour Golf Tournament was held at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, N.C., from Oct. 2-7.

This is the 8th year the department and the society has managed concessions at the event, which supports the Department of Sport & Event Management’s endowed scholarship effort. Funds support a student major with an outstanding academic and service record, and demonstrated financial need.

The society, along with the Sport & Event Management Department’s office assistant, Samantha Brain, recruited about 200 volunteers to manage seven concession stands located around the golf course. Assistance was provided by various SEM students and members of PSES students from Winston-Salem State University and its sport management major’s club.

Also assisting in this effort were Elon alumni, including repeat volunteer Jamie Schatz. Department faculty Tony Weaver, Cara McFadden and Mark Cryan, along with program assistant Alyssa Donohue, helped over the six days of play. In addition, Amanda Sturgill from the School of Communications brought her husband, David, to support the effort and Dean Paul Parsons also volunteered.

The departmental endowed scholarship was initiated in 2005 and is on the brink of surpassing $100,000, the result of funds generated largely by efforts of the Premier Sport & Event Society leadership and their members.

More than $21,000 has been raised for the scholarship from involvement with the SAS – PGA Champion’s tour event over the past 8 years.
