Math majors Christopher Shill '14 and Erin Strosnider '14 and assistant professor of mathematics Chad Awtrey gave a joint, invited presentation at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, on April 9, 2014.
The talk focused on results from joint work with Elon math major Nicole Miles ’15 and UNCG doctoral student Jonathan Milstead, and was supported in part by a grant from the Center for Undergraduate Research in Mathematics (NSF grants DMS-0636648 and DMS-1148695).
Shill began the talk by describing background knowledge on p-adic numbers, including algebraic and analytic aspects. Awtrey discussed theory related to polynomials with p-adic coefficients and the structure of their roots. The talk concluded with Strosnider giving a detailed description of the new algorithm the researchers developed for computing important data concerning degree 14 polnomials with p-adic coefficients.
This talk marked the fourth presentation for Shill and Strosnider on this research project this year, and it was their second invited presentation. Their work has resulted in two professionally-refereed papers that have been accepted for publication: one to the journal Involve and the other to the conference proceedings of the 9th annual UNCG regional mathematics and statistics conference.
Also in attendance at the presentation were Elon undergaduate researchers Nakhila Mistry ’14, Robin French ’15, and Nicole Soltz ’17; each of whom is currently working on a cognate project.
