Fellows of distinction

As many as 25 students enter Elon each year as the new class of Journalism or Communications Fellows.

Journalism and Communications Fellows are among the most active students on campus. They are expected to be involved with student media organizations, and often become leaders in student media.

Theoretical concepts learned in special Fellows courses come alive as students gain real-world experience working with the student-run newspaper, radio or television station, the student public relations society, the campus film society or through an internship at a regional or national media site.

Special Courses: Fellows sections of Communications in a Global Society, Media Writing and Digital Media Convergence explore the world of contemporary communications.

$1000 Study Abroad Grant: This opens the door for Fellows to learn about communications in another culture. Whether exploring from behind the lens of a camera or keeping a personal journal, Fellows gain an international perspective essential to a media professional.

Capstone Experience: In the senior year, Fellows work on a major senior project/capstone experience. These projects may include original research, investigation of a media or communications topic, or a performance presentation in your area of interest.

Internships: A central element of the Fellows experience. Working with the school's Director of Internships, advanced Fellows will find opportunities to work with major networks, print media, film studios or public relations firms.

Scholarships
Five Journalism and Communications Fellows in each class receive a $3,000 scholarship renewable annually as long as a student remains a Fellow. These scholarships are awarded in addition to any Presidential Scholarship received.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria
Academically talented high school seniors who have a strong interest in and plan to major in journalism, broadcast and new media, corporate communications or cinema are eligible. Students should have a GPA of at least 3.3. The average SAT score of the 2007 Fellows class was above 1300. But test scores and GPAs are only one component of the selection process. Selection is based on high school academic performance, extracurricular involvement, an essay and a sophisticated on-campus interview process.
