The generosity of Elon employees has fueled the success of this year's Faculty/Staff Campaign. The annual giving drive runs through May 31.
Members of the campus community have responded enthusiastically to this year’s Faculty/Staff Campaign, under the leadership of co-chairs Rhonda Belton and Jim Drummond, as well as 45 volunteer faculty and staff captains. The captains have led successful grassroots efforts within their departments, encouraging co-workers to make a gift to Elon.
Their efforts are paying off. With four months left in the 2010-2011 campaign, more than 550 faculty and staff have contributed $250,000 in gifts and pledges to support student scholarships, faculty development, the Elon Experiences, the Phoenix Club, School of Law and academic departments. So far, 46 percent of faculty and staff have made a gift or pledge this year. During the 2009-2010 campaign, 420 faculty and staff, or 34 percent, contributed $248,796 to the university.
“Much has been accomplished, but much more is yet to be done,” says Drummond, associate professor of sport and event management, noting that the campaign runs until May 31.
This year’s participation goal among faculty and staff is 55 percent. Already academic departments such as Health and Human Performance and Exercise Science have reached 100 percent giving among faculty and staff. In addition, for the second consecutive year, 100 percent of faculty and staff at the School of Law have made an annual gift this year.
In addition to participation, campaign volunteers have emphasized the personal nature of giving to Elon. Russ Gill, professor of English, is one of this year’s Faculty/Staff Campaign donors.
“Elon has helped me develop professionally while enjoying the company of good friends and good students,” Gill says. “I’m happy to return a little to the university.”
Tammy Horn, registrar at the School of Law, has her own reasons for giving back to Elon. “I give for the students,” Horn says. “After all, that is the reason we are here.”
All gifts to the Faculty/Staff Campaign are included as part of Ever Elon: The Campaign for the Future of Our University, which seeks to raise $100 million to build endowment to support students, faculty and facilities. To date, faculty, staff and other donors have contributed more than $87 million in gifts, pledges and planned gifts toward the Ever Elon goal. This year’s Faculty/Staff Campaign will play an important role in helping the university complete Ever Elon this year.
Employees who make gifts of $1,500 or more are eligible for membership in The Elon Society, the university’s premier annual giving recognition society. Planned gifts, including estate gifts, also count toward the Faculty/Staff Campaign and Ever Elon.
