Phoenix men clinch SoCon tennis title

Elon's men's tennis team won the regular season conference championship and is preparing for the SoCon tournament.

Elon's men's tennis team won the 2013 Southern Conference regular season championship.
Following losses by both UNCG and Samford on April 12, the Elon University men’s tennis team has clinched the 2013 Southern Conference Regular Season title outright. It marks Elon’s fourth regular season crown in the last seven years.

“I’m proud of this group of guys,” said Elon head coach Michael Leonard. “But now we need to focus our attention on the conference tournament. We hope to see a great crowd at our home courts next week, as it should be a very competitive tournament.”

The Phoenix finished the regular season with an 8-2 record against league competition, edging out UNCG (7-3 SoCon) and Samford (6-3 SoCon) for the regular season title. Elon owns an overall record of 15-7 this season.

Elon’s last SoCon regular season title came in 2011. The Phoenix also won it in 2006 and 2007, when it also won the conference tournament and a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Elon is set to host the Southern Conference Tennis Championships next week, April 18-21, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center and Burlington Tennis Center.
