Employee giving nears goal for Faculty/Staff Campaign

With six weeks remaining in this year’s Faculty/Staff Campaign, Elon employees are just a few gifts away from surpassing last year’s record participation rate of 65 percent.

More than 800 employees, or 64 percent, have already made a gift in support of the university since June 1, 2012, when the fiscal year began.

For the campaign to continue its annual growth in participation, which began during the 2007-2008 fiscal year, 17 more employees must make their first gift of the fiscal year before May 31.

Gifts made through the annual giving campaign support scholarships, engaged learning programs, the Elon Experiences and athletics, among other priorities. Employees may also designate gifts to the school or academic department of their choice.

Designating gifts has been a popular option in Elon’s department of mathematics and statistics, where participation has more than doubled from 31 to 65 percent over the last two years. Jan Mays, the department’s campaign captain, also attributes the boost to an increased awareness of the campaign’s importance among co-workers.

“People in our department have really responded to face to face interactions and the opportunity to talk about the good things that are taking place at Elon,” said Mays, a senior lecturer in mathematics.

“The option to designate gifts to existing scholarships has also been really important, because people like the idea that a scholarship continues giving back.”

A campaign celebration and donor reception is planned for May 10 at 3:30 p.m. in Lakeside Dining Hall. Campaign co-chairs Paul Miller, professor of exercise science, and Kelly Reimer, director of teaching and learning technologies, will present a check with the amount raised to President Leo M. Lambert.

“Our sincerest thanks go to those who have already participated in this year’s Faculty/Staff Campaign,” said Miller. “The most important measure of this campaign is the participation rate. Every gift, regardless of the size, makes a difference and adds to this campaign.”
