Kevin Kline '09 snags Emmy for political show

Communications alumnus wins for a piece about a plant explosion in a nearby Texas town.

Elon University School of Communications alumnus Kevin Kline ’09 won an Emmy Nov. 9 for producing a political show for KXAN Austin News in Austin, Texas. The Emmy recognition was in the category of Politics/Government: Program / Special / Feature Segment for a show aired during the Texas legislative session called “In Session. In Depth.”

The piece that won the Emmy for the show, which aired on Sundays from January through mid-August,  focused on a fertilizer plant explosion in the town of West, Texas, in April. KXAN political reporter and anchor of “In Session. In-Depth.” Josh Hinkle covered the story from West for several weeks. On April 28, Kline and Hinkle worked together from hundreds of miles apart to put together a 30-minute program looking at the political causes and implications of the explosion.

Kline wrote the show, and Hinkle taped the segments in West. Both of them edited the entire piece. Below are the links to the program in 3 parts:

Kline began working at KXAN in May of 2012, after several years at WXII in Winston-Salem, N.C., where he produced the evening and morning newscasts. Recently, Kline was named the 6 p.m. newscast producer.

“I’ve been fortunate to work with some awesome colleagues and professors who have helped me grow,” Kline said. “I am especially thankful for my experiences at Elon working on Phoenix14News, now Elon Local News. Many of the skills I use today stem back to the lessons learned during live election coverage and our regular newscasts.”
