Neighborhood Farm Initiative (NFI) works to increase opportunities for D.C. residents to grow food and participate in the diverse communities that thrive in shared urban gardening spaces. Volunteers will be completing general organic farm maintenance including planting, weeding, and maintaining compost piles and paths.
- We recommend coming dressed prepared to get dirty and wearing closed-toed shoes. NFI provides tools and gloves.
- Please bring a water bottle to help us reduce trash waste from disposable cups; NFI will provide the water.
- There’s no restroom on site! If necessary, NFI tells volunteers to use a wooded area nearby or the restroom at the metro (ladies, you may want to bring tissues!).

Map of NFI Garden. To get to the garden from the Fort Totten metro station, turn left (north) and walk up the sidewalk past where the buses stop. Across from the parking lot and after some trees, you’ll see a paved path going up over a slight hill on your left (going north), take that path across a field and you’ll see us at the top of the hill!
If you Google-map 100 Gallatin Street, NE, you’ll see the field from the satellite view and the path that connects Gallatin street to the metro stop.

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue Adoption Event

The Washington, D.C. Chapter will volunteer for National Month of Service at Lucky Dog’s April adoption event at Unleashed by PETCO on Pentagon Row. Volunteers will receive a brief orientation beginning promptly at 11:30 a.m. and will be assigned to handle fostered dogs, fill water bowls and represent Lucky Dog to potential adopters. Children have to be at least 12 years old to volunteer with a parent, and 18 years old to handle a dog on their own.

As part of April’s Rise Up and Serve National Month of Service, the Washington, D.C. Chapter has asked alumni to rise up and nominate their favorite local non-profits. Catharine Matthews ’05 has been a volunteer with Lucky Dog Animal Rescue for nearly three years. Lucky Dog rescues dogs from high-kill shelters in Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Two of the shelters euthanize dogs on Friday allowing each dog only a five day opportunity to be rescued. One of these shelters is located inside the county penitentiary which allows little chance for the dogs being adopted. To date, Catharine has fostered more than 60 Lucky Dogs and has helped them find their “furrever” home.
