School of Health Sciences hosts workshop

The School of Health Sciences Global Learning Opportunities Program hosted Elon’s undergraduate Chapter of the Global Medical Brigades April 28 for a vital signs and medical terminology workshop. 

Approximately 15 doctor of physical therapy and physician assistant studies student volunteers, Sue Chinworth, associate professor of physical therapy education, Melissa Murfin, assistant professor of physian assistant studies, and J.C. Swanner, an emergency medical technician, taught a vital sign techniques workshop on April 28 to the undergraduate Chapter of the Global Medical Brigades.

Members of the Global Medical Brigades learned to take blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory rate in preparation for skills needed on a service trip to Ghana this August. In addition, they practiced their knowledge of medical terminology and medical abbreviations while playing jeopardy with DPT and PA student volunteers. 

The group enjoyed pizza and fun while forging new friendships and mentor relationships. The event was organized by Paula DiBiasio, assistant professor of physical therapy education and chair of the School of Health Sciences Global Learning Opportunities Committee and advisor for the Elon Chapter of the Medical Global Brigades.
