Information for Families and Guests

October 2017

Elon University's 128th Commencement is scheduled for May 19, 2018, and plans are already underway for the special occasion. Commencement will once again take place on Scott Plaza in front of Alamance building. This location provides a larger space and better sight lines for our graduates, their families and guests.

Tickets are not required for the outdoor ceremony. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 7:00 a.m. Chairs cannot be reserved before this time. Please note that the area has minimal shade. Drinking water tables, misting stations and shade tents will be located around the seating area. As an alternative, indoor viewing is planned in Alumni Gym and other air-conditioned locations for those who may be uncomfortable outside for the duration of the ceremony. We experienced plentiful sun and warmer than normal temperatures at the ceremony last May. We recommend following the local Elon forecast as you prepare for Commencement weekend in 2018.

In case of inclement weather, Commencement will be moved into Alumni Gymnasium for two separate ceremonies. Bachelor of Arts candidates will receive their diplomas in a 9:15 a.m. ceremony, and Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration candidates will receive their diplomas in a ceremony at 1:15 p.m.

Because of the seating limitations in Alumni Gymnasium, each graduate is allocated two rain plan tickets for family/guests. Other guests are invited to watch a live video feed of the ceremony from locations across campus. Beginning on Monday, April 30, graduates may pick up the two rain location tickets from the office of the Vice President of Student Life in Alamance 109. Implementation of the rain plan, if necessary, will be announced on the university website, Elon University’s Facebook and Twitter feeds, and on a special phone line: 336-278-rain (7246).

Full details, including schedules, maps and other information about Elon’s Commencement will be available on the Commencement website: www.elon.edu/commencement. Information will also be provided through the Elon Guides mobile app for handy reference of scheduled activities and campus locations. The website and guidebook app will be updated closer to the date. In the meantime, the Commencement Office can be reached at 336-278-2641.

Best wishes to our 2018 graduates. We look forward to a memorable Commencement weekend.

Sincerely yours,

Jeffrey Clark
