The Honors Program offers intellectually demanding and dynamic courses that focus on writing and critical-thinking skills. Throughout the four-year sequence, you will learn how to conduct sophisticated academic research in preparation for the highlight of the program—a project of professional quality that culminates in a published volume in Elon's Belk Library. To learn more about the Honors Fellows visit the program website.

Simply put, as an Honors Fellow you will be challenged to take advantage of all the best features of an Elon education:

  • Take interdisciplinary honors courses to get a broad perspective on the arts and sciences and their interconnections.
  • Learn the formal process of writing a thesis by choosing a topic and working collaboratively with a faculty mentor. There's no better preparation for graduate school.
  • Experience the thrill and intensity of writing and presenting a major work of scholarship.
  • Expand your global perspective through study abroad or Study USA.
  • Join a community of kindred spirits who want to be fully engaged in a life-changing academic experience.

Who should apply?

Students who have taken a demanding high school curriculum, have an excellent GPA and rank in the top of their class should apply. Standardized test scores will also be considered. Current Honors Fellows had a combined evidence-based reading and writing and math SAT score of 1380 or an ACT score of 31 at the time of application.

Each year, 43 students are selected as Honors Fellows based on their high school records, essays, teacher recommendations and interviews. Honors Fellows may pursue any major offered at Elon with the exception of engineering.

Program Benefits

Scholarships

Honors Fellows receive a $13,500 scholarship renewable annually based on academic performance and participation in the program. This is in addition to a Presidential Scholarship of $6,000, bringing total scholarship funding to $19,500 each year, or $78,000 over four years. Each year, one Honors Fellows is selected as the William R. Kenan, Jr. Honors Fellow and receives a full tuition scholarship renewable annually.

Honors Fellows who plan to attend medical school may also apply for Jane Macon Baird Pre-medical Scholarships that provide an additional $4,000 per year. These scholarships are renewable annually, provided students meet the criteria for the scholarship. A special essay is required for consideration for the Baird Scholarships.

Elon Experiences and Research Grants

All Honors Fellows receive a $1,000 grant for a university-approved study abroad or Study USA experience.
