The focus on student well-being is a community-wide effort by all. As an advisor, you will sometimes be notified of a difficulty that a student is experiencing via email. And you may sometimes feel that you need to notify someone because you are concerned about a student.

Academic Early Warning

Early Warning, or E-WARNING, is a progress report system where faculty report academic concerns for students. This includes, but is not limited to, excessive absences, lack of participation, missing homework or quizzes, low test grades, and other academic focused concerns. Instructors submit an E-warning using OnTrack via the class roster.  They are able to indicate reasons for the e-warning and provide an explanation. Both student and advisor will receive a copy of the e-warning along with resources. View the How to Submit an Early Warning document for more information on this process.

As advisor, we recommend that you check in with students on e-warnings; especially early in the semester. The earlier the outreach, the more opportunity for recovery. You can also add a comment regarding your communications in Advising Notes in OnTrack. Please limit these notes to academic information only.

Sharing Concerns for a Student’s Well-being

Difficulty with academic performance is often not related to the course material. Faculty, faculty advisors, ELN 101 advisors, staff, and students may be made aware of difficulty a student is going through that warrants additional significant support. Examples of concerns include, but are not limited to, mental health, significant academic distress, physical well-being, financial constraints, community connection, and more.

We strongly encourage members of the Elon University community to share such concerns for a student’s well-being through the Office of Student Care and Outreach in the Dean of Students Office. You can share your concerns via the Student Care and Outreach Referral form. Additional information on how to support students in distress is available on the Student Concerns Website: http://www.elon.edu/ShareYouCare. When shared, a staff member may consult with you on how best to reach out and support the student involved. Confidentiality, though, may limit what you can know.

Notification of Student Absences

Academic Advising will forward information to a student’s professors and academic advisor regarding missed classes when verified by Elon’s Health Services personnel. Students who are seen by off campus providers should secure verification of those visits from the healthcare facility and share with their professors. Make-up work due to illness is individually negotiated between students and professors.
