Elon Women in STEM

Cohort 1 features five learning modules and is open to first-year students. The two-hour sessions take place once a month, three times a semester.

Elon Women in STEM aims to create a sense of belonging in a STEM major and increase participants’ confidence of success in their future careers.  In order to achieve these goals, our first-year and sophomore participants need the guidance of an engaged mentor!

This is a good role for you if:

• You have the time to engage with up to 2 mentees throughout the 23-24 academic year.
• You’re willing to share your successes and challenges being a woman in a STEM major.
• You can help mentees find and connect with resources available to them at Elon.
• You can provide one faculty or staff/administration reference from Elon.

The professional and personal benefits of being an Elon Women in STEM mentor include:

• Improving communication and personal skills.
• Developing leadership and management qualities.
• Increasing your confidence and motivation.
• Reinforcing your own study skills and knowledge of your subject(s).
• Engaging in a volunteering opportunity, valued by employers.
• Enhancing your resume.
• Increasing your circle of friends.
• Benefiting from a sense of fulfillment and personal growth.
• Access to junior/senior engagement sessions and Field Trip Friday visits to area businesses and organizations that employ STEM professionals.

With these benefits come responsibilities. These are the expectations for Elon Women in STEM  mentors:

• Mentor one to two students from your major and meet with them at least once a month. You can meet with both mentees at the same time but we encourage you to meet individually with your mentees at least twice a semester.
• Log your interactions with your mentee in a provided form.
• Respond to mentees emails or texts within 24-hours during weekdays.
• Attend a campus event with your mentees.
• Share your experience about the program, courses, etc (e.g., what to expect in the semesters/years ahead).
• Adapt your support to the needs of your mentees, which may depend on academic, social, national and other backgrounds and prior experience.
• Support your mentees with developing on-campus connections (introduce them to student organizations, volunteer opportunities, and other students in your major).
• Check in on your mentees’ morale and academic progress/goals.
