SXSW is a conference that celebrates the convergence of tech, film, music, education and culture.

The Doherty Center for Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship plans to host an alternative spring break trip to South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, from March 12-19, 2022.

Interest meeting: Thursday, Sept. 2 at 4:30 p.m. ET in KoBC 244.

What is SXSW?

South by Southwest® dedicates itself to helping creative people achieve their goals. Founded in 1987 in Austin, Texas, SXSW® is best known for its conference and festivals that celebrate the convergence of tech, film, music, education, and culture.

What are the dates?

We will leave on March 12 and return March 19.

What is the program cost?


What does the program fee include?

  • Round Trip airfare from RDU
  • Ground transportation from Elon to RDU & AUS to hotel
  • Hotel accommodations (double occupancy)
  • Entry to the conference
  • Minimum of one dinner as a group in Austin

What do I need to bring money for?

Baggage fees, meals and snacks, additional entertainment, souvenirs

Where are we staying?

Sheraton Austin Hotel at the Capitol. Rooms will be double occupancy.

How far is the hotel to the Austin Convention Center?

The hotel is 0.6 miles from the Convention Center. There are no major roads that need to crossed between the hotel and convention center.

Participants are expected to be able to be on their feet for extended periods of time and be able to walk long distances.

Will I need to pay for transportation while in Austin?

The Doherty Center will arrange transportation to and from the Austin airport and hotel.

Our hotel is within walking distance of the Austin Convention Center. However, some events may be located further away. Public transportation, pedicabs, electric scooters and ride shares are expected to be available in Austin. Please note: With the number of people that will be in Austin and the uncertainty of the gig economy, ride share prices may vary wildly and may be unreasonably high.

Will we have program meetings before going to SXSW?

Yes! We will meet as a group once during fall semester and twice during spring semester. Dates TBD.

Does this trip count as an ELR or can I get course credit for this program?


How many students will be on this trip?

The minimum of students needed for the trip is 6. The maximum is 18.
