How should we celebrate the online Conferral ceremony?

Students, families and friends should go to the Conferral site this Friday, May 22 at noon EST to watch the 30-minute ceremony, view the program, and see graduates’ names and honors. You can post photos and well wishes using the hashtag #ElonGrad, download Class of 2020 Digital Swag and view photos and posts on the social media dashboard.

What does “virtual conferring of degrees” mean?

On May 22, President Connie Ledoux Book and Provost Aswani Volety will formally confer degrees upon all graduating students via a virtual celebration at noon EDT. The 30-minute ceremony will feature musical presentations by members of the Class of 2020 and remarks from the senior class officers and President Book.

This virtual conferring is not commencement, nor does it replace the in-person commencement for 2020 graduates.

Do I need to register to have my degree virtually conferred?

No, all 2020 graduates are eligible.

Do I need to view the virtual celebration to have my degree virtually conferred?

No, but we hope you and your family are able to join in the celebration of your accomplishments. The virtual conferring will be broadcast live at noon EDT at www.elon.edu/live and on the undergraduate conferral website. It will also be available for on-demand viewing after the event on the undergraduate conferral website.

Will my name be called/announced during the virtual conferring of degrees ceremony?

During the virtual conferral ceremony, all 2020 graduates will be conferred as a class. The conferral website includes a Class of 2020 graduate list that can be searched by name and filtered by degree. Calling of names will be reserved for the in-person ceremony at a later date.

Is there a dress code for the virtual conferring?

No. Students who log in to view the virtual conferring will not be shown on the live feed.

When will graduates receive their diplomas?

Following the virtual conferral ceremony, graduates will receive an electronic copy of their diploma. Physical diplomas with covers will be mailed in June.

Will my graduation date stay the same?

Yes, degrees will be virtually conferred on May 22 and this date will appear on the diploma.

Postponed Commencement Ceremony FAQs

Are the May 2020 Commencement activities canceled?

No. The in-person Commencement ceremony is postponed to a later date. Further details will be announced when it is safe to gather.

How will I be notified about the postponed Commencement activities?

Updates will be posted on the Commencement website as soon as they are available, and graduates will receive an email from the Office of the President with details once the date is set.

How do I get my Elon oak sapling?

Saplings will be distributed at the in-person ceremony.

Am I allowed to come to campus and take pictures in my regalia?

In accordance with the state of North Carolina, Elon’s campus access is currently reopening to essential operations only. When campus if fully reopened, you are welcome to return and take photos.

How do graduates receive their honor cords?

Latin Honors (summa cum laude, magna cum laude and cum laude) are designated on the virtual conferral ceremony website. Stoles, sashes, medallions and cords are distributed by academic honor societies on campus. Graduates should check with the honor society adviser for details.
