Elon University’s Masters of Education candidates complete a graduate internship as the final component of their study. The summer camps provide the setting for these internships. All graduate candidates are licensed teachers and the camps (and graduate candidates) are supervised by Elon faculty.

FLEX Program: A Formative Learning Experience

Purpose of Program

To provide a summer learning opportunity for academically gifted students that allows them to investigate a topic of interest, make new friends, and challenge themselves intellectually under the supervision and guidance of Elon University M.Ed. candidates in the field of Gifted Education.  Students will be encouraged to explore their own unique skills and abilities through experiences designed to reinvigorate their enthusiasm for learning.

Goals of the Program

  • To allow students to explore interests, skills, and aptitudes
  • To provide students with intellectual challenges
  • To provide opportunities for students to develop their social skills
  • To provide parents and regular educators personalized information about how to best challenge and motivate individual learners.

Student Eligibility

The FLEX Program is designed as enrichment for academically gifted students currently enrolled in the Alamance-Burlington Schools. Participants are rising 3rd – 8th graders. Space is limited.

2020 Program Information

July 20 – 29, 2020
8:00 a.m. – Noon
Monday thru Friday only

Cost: $100* per accepted student
*Fees may be waived for accepted students who receive free or reduced lunches. A copy of the approval letter should be mailed to: Jennifer Strange at Campus Box 2105 Elon, NC 27244.

Transportation: Parents/Guardians will need to provide transportation to and from Elon University. Students are to arrive no later than 8:00 a.m. and should be picked up promptly at noon. No supervision can be provided for your child before 8:00 a.m. or after noon. Punctuality is important.

Family Involvement: Family members will be invited on the last day to a showcase event that highlights the accomplishments of students. Parents/guardians will also have an opportunity to meet with FLEX teachers to celebrate students’ unique gifts and discuss how their strengths and interests may be explored for future growth.

Process: Applications will be accepted between March 1, 2020 and April 1, 2020. Each applicant will be AIG verified prior to acceptance. You will be notified of a decision by May 1st. If you are accepted, you will send a $100 check to Elon University for each child attending, or mail-in a copy of your free/reduced lunch letter to waive your registration fee.  Registration does NOT guarantee program acceptance.
