Research/Creative Interests

My research interests are rooted in ancient Mediterranean cultures, and tend to revolve around storytelling and identity–for example, how classical mythology underpinned a sense of shared identity among ancient communities, how history and myths were exploited in Greco-Roman political propaganda, or, in later historical contexts, how storytelling about Greece and Rome became the basis for new forms of identity or political movements. I also study multiculturalism and ethnic diversity in the ancient Mediterranean world, as well as politicized appropriations of Greece and Rome by white supremacist/nationalist groups in support of extremist ideologies.

Student Qualifications

  • Classical Studies majors/minors
  • Students of other majors/minors for whom the ancient world plays an important role in their research
  • I welcome anyone with a passion for history and its legacies in the modern world, including those belonging to historically marginalized communities.
