On June 21, 2019, President Connie Ledoux Book announced the selection of Aswani Volety, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and executive director for the Center for Marine Science at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, as Elon University’s next provost and vice president for academic affairs. Volety will join Elon on Sept. 1, 2019, succeeding Steven House, who previously announced his plans to step down as provost after serving for more than a decade.
Elon’s provost is a member of the university’s senior staff and reports to President Book. The provost serves as the university’s chief operations officer and chief academic officer, managing internal administrative operations of the university and acting in the absence of the president. The provost provides leadership and direction for the long-range planning process, the university’s annual priorities for action and the annual budget process.
Elon launched a national search for its next provost and vice president for academic affairs in February 2019. The search was conducted by a 20-member search committee with the assistance of executive search firm Witt/Kieffer. Nominations and applications were accepted through the end of March 2019. Candidate evaluations, off-site interviews and campus interviews were scheduled for late April and May.
