Elon University launched the search for its next provost and vice president for academic affairs in February 2019. This transition in leadership was planned by Provost Steven House, who announced in January 2019 his intention to conclude his service as provost by the end of the year.

President Connie Ledoux Book appointed a 20-member Search Committee co-chaired by Eric Hall, professor of exercise science and faculty athletics representative, and Jean Rattigan-Rohr, professor of education and incoming vice president for access and success. The committee engaged the services of Witt/Kieffer, an executive search firm, to assist with the national search.

A series of listening sessions were held in February to allow members of the Elon community to share their thoughts about the qualifications, experience and personal characteristics of the next provost. Following these campus listening sessions, candidate evaluations and off-site interviews, the committee has identified four candidates for campus interviews.
