Where can I find Zoom links and passwords for my events?

Zoom links and passwords will be sent (from Elon Alumni) via email prior to each day’s events throughout Homecoming & Reunion Week. Be sure to keep an eye on your inbox for this important information.

Do I need an account to use Zoom?

A Zoom account is not required for Homecoming & Reunion Week, however, you will need to download the Zoom application.

How do I download the Zoom application?

You may download the Zoom application before the event from here: https://zoom.us/download. You can also download the application while you join your first Zoom event. The application will be downloaded automatically. If not, click “download & run Zoom” on your screen.

Do I have to have a webcam to join an event on Zoom?

You are not required to have a webcam to join an event on Zoom, however, one would be necessary in order to transmit video of yourself. Without a webcam, you will be able to listen, speak and view the webcam video of other participants.

I am new to Zoom. How can I learn more about the platform before my first event?

Elon has compiled a list of tutorial videos so new Zoom users can get acquainted with and comfortable using the platform. These short videos will get you ready to dive right into your first Zoom event during Homecoming & Reunion Week!

Getting Started

Where can I find the Homecoming & Reunion Week Zoom backgrounds?

The special Homecoming & Reunion Week Zoom backgrounds can be found here. Click or tap the thumbnail image to enlarge. From there you can right click to save the file to your desktop. On mobile devices, tap and hold for a save option.

How do I change my virtual background before the event?

Note: You will need to have a Zoom account to change your virtual background before an event.

  1. Log in to the Zoom application.
  2. Click your profile picture on the upper right corner, then click “Settings.”
  3. In the left menu bar, click on the Virtual Background tab (if you don’t see this tab, log in to the Zoom website, go to Settings and toggle on Virtual Background).
  4. In the Virtual Background tab, click the + icon to upload one of our special Homecoming & Reunion Week Zoom backgrounds from your computer.

How do I add or change my profile picture before a meeting?

Note: You will need to have a Zoom account to customize your profile picture. 

  1. Log in to the Zoom application.
  2. Click your profile picture on the upper right corner, then click “Settings.”
  3. Click “Profile”, and then click “Edit My Profile.” You will be directed to your profile page on web. Click “Change” under the profile picture.
  4. Click “Upload” in the lower left corner.
  5. Adjust the portion you would like to use for your profile picture. Click “Save.”

How do I test my video/audio before joining an event?

Note: You will need to have a Zoom account to test your audio and video beforehand. 

  1. Log in to the Zoom application.
  2. Click your profile picture on the upper right corner, then click “Settings.”
  3. Click “Video” under the setting to test your camera. You can also text your mic and speaker under the “Audio.”

How do I join an event?

Each morning you will receive an email with details on how to join the events you are participating in that day. You may click the link, copy the link into your browser or enter the meeting ID number after selecting “Join” in your Zoom application. You will also need the password to gain access to the event.

After you click the link, you will either be instructed to download or launch Zoom. Click “Open Zoom” if you have already downloaded the application. Otherwise, click “Download & Run Zoom” to install the Zoom application.

Click “Join with Computer Audio.” After joining, please click “Start Video” in the lower left corner of your screen.

Can I join an event from my phone?

While we suggest using a laptop for a more engaging virtual experience, you may also join a meeting from your smartphone by following the instructions below:

  1. Open the Zoom mobile app. If you have not downloaded the Zoom mobile app yet, you can download it from the application store on your device.
  2. Join a meeting using one of these methods:
    Tap Join a Meeting if you want to join without signing in.
    Sign in to Zoom then tap Join.
  3. Enter the meeting ID number (this will be emailed to you on the morning of each event) and your display name.
  4. Select if you would like to connect audio and/or video and select Join.

Can I join a Zoom event after it starts?

Of course! As long as you have registered for the event, we’d love to have you join.

During the Event

How do I turn my audio/video on and off?

You can turn on and off your audio/video by clicking “Mute/Unmute” and “Start Video/Stop Video” from the lower left corner of the screen. Elon’s default security settings are for the host and participants to join with their video off. After joining, please click “Start Video” in the lower left corner of your screen.

How do I rename myself?

  1. Click on the “Participants” icon at the bottom of the window.
  2. Click “More” next to your name. Then, a “Rename” option will show up.
  3. Type your preferred name in the box.

How can I chat with others during an event?

  1. Click the “Chat” in the bottom of the meeting screen.
  2. The chat screen will open on the right. You can type your message into the chat box. You may also select a specific person to send a message to.

How do I add or change my profile picture during a meeting?

Note: You will need to have a Zoom account to customize your profile picture.

Click the three dots next to your video screen, then, click “Add Profile Picture.”

How do I change my virtual background during the event?

  1. Start your Zoom meeting.
  2. Locate the video camera icon that says “Stop Video” and click on the up arrow next to it.
  3. Select “Choose Virtual Background”.
  4. Click the + symbol to upload your custom background.
  5. Uncheck “Mirror my video” and if you do not have a green screen, uncheck “I have a green screen”.
