Since 2009, SAGIC has provided guidance and support to the various university offices dedicated to preventing and responding to sexual assault and relationship violence, as well as promoting gender equality. The advisory council is comprised of faculty, staff, and students, and meets twice a semester.
The committee supports the work of Assistant Director of the Gender & LGBtQIA Center Becca Bishopric Patterson and Coordinator for Violence Response Felicia Cenca by offering strategic and conceptual advice, being a sounding board, and raising awareness across the campus on issues of sexual violence and relationships.
The Coordinator for Violence Response along with the Assistant Dean of Students for Student Health and Wellness and Honor Code Whitney Gregory will support and implement the initiatives recommended by the advisory council.
The charge to the council is to advise the Coordinator for Violence Response on the following:
- Programs and educational activities to create a campus environment in which violence, and especially sexual violence, will never be tolerated;
- Ways to better integrate men into programs and strategies for preventing sexual violence and for promoting healthy relationships among men and women;
- Initiatives to further strengthen awareness of and responses to acts of violence and to best support the victims of violence in a coordinated fashion among campus departments, the Town of Elon Police and CrossRoads; and
- Strategies to deepen and enhance gender equality throughout the university community.
