The National Labor Relations Board issues an order granting Elon University’s Request for Review of the Acting Regional Director’s Decision and Direction of Election. The NLRB says Elon’s Request for Review raises a substantial issue related to whether faculty at universities that have a system of shared governance perform a “managerial role” under the applicable law.

Elon University withdraws a portion of its Request for Review by the National Labor Relations Board related to pre-election conduct by union organizers and managerial employees. On December 18, 2019, the NLRB granted the university’s request to withdraw the portion of the Request for Review regarding those objections.

Elon University asked the National Labor Relations Board to review the NLRB Acting Regional Director’s decision to certify the Service Employees International Union, Workers United Southern Region as the exclusive collective bargaining representative for Elon’s part-time, limited term and visiting faculty members.

The Regional Director of the National Labor Relations Board issues a decision to certify the union vote results. Following the decision, Elon announces that it is preparing to take the next step in the process and file a Request for Review with the national office of the NLRB in Washington, D.C.

Ballots in the election are tallied by the National Labor Relations Board. Of the 283 eligible voters, 200 valid ballots were received. The count was 112 in favor of unionization and 68 against with 20 non-determinative challenged ballots and one void ballot.
