February 23rd-29th, 2020- Supporting Survivors Week– Events such as Take Back the Night, a bi-annual speak-out against violence against women, will be happening during this week dedicated to supporting survivors and their journeys.
Thursday, February 27th, 2020- Take Back the Night– Take Back the Night is a student speak-out that is meant to empower and support survivors of gender-based violence. The speak-out will take place in Whitley Auditorium at 6 pm. The speak-out will be followed by a reception with light refreshments and resources at 7 pm in Steers Pavilion.

National Stalking Awareness Month — January 2020 marks the sixteenth annual National Stalking Awareness Month (NSAM), an annual call to action to recognize and respond to the serious crime of stalking. It is critical to raise the issue of stalking as its own form of gender-based violence as well as a crime that frequently predicts and co-occurs with physical and sexual violence. Check back in December for more information about NSAM events and resources!

Saturday, November 16th – Intersect: Diversity and Leadership Conference – During this conference, participants will engage in dialogue, reflection, and training through keynote speakers, workshops, and lunch and learns. The conference pillars work to inspire participants to create positive change for the common good in their organizations and community.
November 12-20th- Trans Week of Action- “Between November 12 – 20, individuals and organizations around the country will participate in Transgender Awareness Week to help raise the visibility of transgender and gender non-conforming people, and address the issues the community faces.” -GLAAD
Join the GLC in celebrating our trans students, faculty, staff, and community members. Whether you identify as trans, have loved ones who identify as trans, are still figuring things out, or are an ally, please join us in showing support for the trans community and helping raise awareness of the injustices still faced by many trans people today.
Wednesday, November 20th, 5-7 pm- Community Dinner and Trans Day of Remembrance Vigil- TDOR is a time to remember those who were taken from us by violence. We will host a vigil and a reading of the names of all those lost to anti-trans violence in 2019. Please come out to show support, especially if you consider yourself an ally. This is a day to reflect on how our society can do better, and what we will do to make that happen. No trans person should have to move through the world with fear. Please join the GLC and other campus partners for a vigil at 5pm and a community dinner in Lakeside after.

Thursday, October 3rd, 7:30 pm–Andrea Pino-Silvo, “Taking the Reins of Our Movement:” Unapologetic Survivor Storytelling and the Power of Everyday Activism (Whitley Auditorium)–Through her own personal story of survivorhood and journey toward activism and organizing, Andrea L. Pino-Silva will teach students the history of Title IX activism and encourage them to fight racial, gender and LGBTQ based oppression as “everyday activists” on their campus and beyond. Pino-Silva is the co-author of “We Believe You: Survivors of Campus Sexual Assault Speak Out” and co-founder of the national advocacy organization End Rape on Campus where she worked for more than five years to support students in learning their rights under Title IX and changing their campus sexual assault and harassment policies. She is the digital strategy and communications manager at the National Center for Lesbian Rights.

Tuesday, September 10th, 6:30 pm -Boy Erased Showing and Q&A with Filmmaker (Turner Theater)-Join the GLC, Truitt Center, and PFLAG for a showing of Boy Erased, a film about a boy who undergoes conversion therapy, followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker.

Thursday, September 20th – Sex in the Dark – This event attempts to teach new and old students about guilt-free sex education. The event prides itself of LGBTQ+ inclusiveness and sexual health. Students will participate in a lights-off Q+A event that is focused on promoting fun, “guiltless” sex education. Join the GLC and Effect at 5pm in the LaRose Digital Theater.

Monday, October 1st- Tiq Milan, “A Man by My Own Design: Reimagining Masculinity from a Trans Experience” – Join us in Yeager Recital Hall at 6pm to hear from writer, speaker and activist Tiq Milan as he talks about his experience as a Black trans man navigating masculinity with intentionality. In a society where gender roles often lead to toxic masculinity, Milan discusses being a “man of his own design” where he re-constructs masculinity from a feminist perspective. This event is sponsored by the Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Lecture Endowment, The Fund for Excellence in the Arts and Sciences, Women’s, Gender & Sexualities Studies, the Gender & LGBTQIA Center, and the Center for Race, Ethnicity, and Diversity Education.
Tuesday, October 2nd – Kim and Tiq Milan, “Radical Black Love: A Political Act” – Join Tiq and Kim Katrin Milan at 7pm in Whitley Auditorium for an exciting, thought-provoking talk about blackness, queerness and love in the face of adversity – both how it can heal and be a radical act of resistance. Tiq and Kim will speak to their experiences as a transgender man and a queer woman, and discuss love as a means of liberation. Saturday, May 5th – LGBTQIA Alumni Summit – Join Elon’s LGBTQIA alumni network and the Gender and LGBTQIA Center for a summit bringing together alumni, students and community allies to both celebrate achievements of the past and collaborate on future plans. LGNITE will offer interactive workshops to educate, keynote addresses to encourage and an overall experience designed to energize participants who will be encouraged to use what they have learned to implement change in their communities.

Join Elon 2013 alum and HuffPost Women’s Reporter Alanna Vagianos at 7:30pm in the Isabella Cannon Room to hear about how she grappled with the trials and tribulations of being a feminist reporter when people finally began believing women.

Tuesday, April 17th – The Mask You Live In Screening – Join students researching toxic masculinity in a viewing of “The Mask You Live In” followed by a 30 minute Q&A and discussion on masculinity and how it affects every gender, especially young males. The screening will be held in KOBC 208 at 6:30pm.

Friday, April 20th – Self Care as Radical Work – Self-care is not only “good” practice, it is vital to the healing and justice we seek for ourselves and the students we serve. In this workshop, we will examine the science and lived experience of stress, fatigue, compassion, and values-based living in order to discover new models of self-care. This workshop will take place from 12-1:30pm in Oaks 212.
Friday, April 20th – Trauma Informed Yoga – From 4:15-5:15 in the Sacred Space, Jennifer Brigman will be leading a trauma informed yoga session as a part of Supporting Survivors Week.

Monday, February 13th – International Condom Day – Come to Phi Beta Kappa Plaza from 11:00-1:00 and celebrate National Condom Day! There will be testing as well as male and female condoms available. Multiple student organizations and community organizations will be on hand to share their gender and sexuality events and resources. Safer sex materials will be provided and there will be free HIV/STI testing done by Alamance Cares.

Tuesday, April 4th – Michael Messner “More Men: From Violence to Anti-Violence” 7pm Whitley Aud – Michael Messner is professor of sociology and gender studies at the University of Southern California. His teaching and research focuses on gender and sports, men and masculinities, and gender-based violence. He is the author of several books, including It’s all for the kids: Gender, families and youth sports (California, 2009), King of the wild suburb: A memoir of fathers, sons and guns (Plain View Press, 2011), and most recently, Some men: Feminist allies and the movement to end violence against women (Oxford University Press, 2015). His honors include the Pursuit of Justice Award from the California Women’s Law Center, the Feminist Mentoring Award from the Sociologists for Women in Society, and the Jessie Bernard Award, presented by the American Sociological Association in recognition of contributions to the understanding of women’s lives. His talk will answer the question: What does it mean for men to join with women as allies in preventing sexual assault and domestic violence? Thursday, January 5th – Willy Wilkinson “Viewing Trans Experience Through a Mixed Heritage Lens” – 6:00 pm – LaRose Theater – Willy Wilkinson, MPH, is an award-winning, mixed heritage, Asian American, transgender writer, public health consultant, cultural competency trainer, and spoken word performer. Reading excerpts from his writing, Wilkinson will use these passages as a jumping-off point for an engaging discussion about culturally compentent approaches to social interactions, community membership, classification systems and services.
Thursday, January 5th – Willy Wilkinson “Creating a Trans Affirming Campus” – 10:00 am & 3:00 pm – Moseley 215 – This workshop will explore the range of transgender identities and experience, and identify how to create a respectful campus environment. We will discuss health, educational, and legal issues that impact trans people, and identify best practices for systemically supporting trans students and colleagues.
Wednesday, January 18th – Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Lecture: Michael Kimmel, “Mars and Venus, Or Planet Earth: Women and Men in a New Millennium” – A tireless advocate of gender equality, author Michael Kimmel is one of the world’s leading experts on men and masculinity. A distinguished professor of sociology and gender studies at Stonybrook University (NY), Kimmel founded the center for the Study of Men and Masculinity at the university in 2013.

Thursday, December 1 – World AIDS Day Event – In honor of World AIDS Day, we’ll have Alamance Cares doing HIV/STD Testing 10AM-2PM in McKinnon F, and then from 5PM-8PM, we’ll have free food & speakers galore as we uncover and explore the realities of people living with, and impacted by, HIV & AIDS. This is collaboration with Red Ribbon Society, Alamance Pride, Gender & LGBTQIA Center, AIDS Health Foundation, Alamance Cares, and many more!!!!

Starts with an Interfaith Service at 11:00, followed by musical performances all day, including 2 drag shows and local breakdancing teens!!!

Tuesday, August 23 – Pronoun Training Session for 100+ Elon 101 Instructors – 10:15 – As Elon 101 instructors will now have access to the newly added gender pronoun fields for incoming student records, this session will help them with the importance of recognizing pronouns, avoiding use of the word “preferred,” practicing using they/them as a singular pronoun, as well as what to do if they make a mis-step.
Thursday, August 25 – LGBTQIA Ally Training for 100+ Second-Year Law School Students – 9:00 – As part of the Elon Law Leadership Series for students entering law practica, internships, and the profession at large, this session connects the entire 2L (2nd Year Law) class of Elon Law School with scenarios around inclusive language, working with LGBTQIA clients, and creating an LGBTQIA-inclusive law firm and practice.
Sunday, August 28 – Living The Maroon Life for 1500+ Incoming First-Year Students – 9:00 – Every incoming student goes through this diversity session filled with student skits around diversity, identity, privilege, intersectionality, and everyone’ s place in creating an inclusive community at Elon University. This session is created & hosted by the Center for Race, Ethnicity, & Diversity Education as well as the Gender & LGBTQIA Center.
