Overview of the LEAD Program

LEAD: Leadership Education and DevelopmentThe Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) Program is a three tiered, self-paced program open to all students.

Tier I, Leading the Self, explores personal foundations of leadership and establishing one’s self as an authentic leader. Tier II, Leading with Others, focuses on civic responsibility, group dynamics, and cultural awareness and appreciation. Tier III, Leading for Change, is a culmination of a student’s leadership experience through immersion in positive social change.

Students can begin the program at any point during their time at Elon and work through the LEAD Program at their own pace. It is recommended that Tier I be completed in one or two semesters, Tier II in two semesters, and Tier III in at least two semesters.

Students who complete Tiers I and II will earn a leadership certificate. Following the completion of Tier II, students looking to further deepen their leadership experience can complete Tier III. Students who complete Tier III earn the distinction of being a Cannon Leader, which includes earning Leadership ELR credit and receiving a LEAD Program graduation stole.

Tier I: Leading the Self

All Elon students participate in the leadership process, either in formal leadership roles or as informal leaders and followers. The purpose of Tier I is to increase students’ awareness of the intentionality of the leadership process and their role within the process. By the end of Tier I, you will view yourself as an empowered individual who is prepared to lead others.

Tier I requirements include:

  • Attending the Elon Leader workshop
  • Completing the StrengthsQuest Inventory
  • Attending the Strengths workshop
  • Attending the Step Up workshop
  • Attending the bELONging workshop
  • Attending the Identifying Your Leadership Mentor workshop (optional for students who need additional assistance)
  • Identifying and meeting with your leadership mentor at least once a semester and submitting a reflection on Moodle
  • Completing at least 10 hours of community service and submitting a reflection on Moodle
  • Completing the Tier I reflection questions and submitting on Moodle

Tier II: Leading with Others

The purpose of Tier II is to develop students’ ability to effectively work with groups and communities, gain a stronger understanding of peoples’ perspectives and differences, and learn the power of collaboration. By the end of Tier II, you will be an influential leader amongst your peers, having the ability to work effectively with others. Upon completion of Tier II, students will earn a leadership certificate.

Tier II requirements include:

  • Attending the Inclusive Leadership workshop
  • Attending the Highly Effective Teams workshop
  • Attending the Leading with Integrity workshop
  • Attending the Tier II Retreat
  • Attending at least one Social Perspective Taking event (See the Cultural Calendar for ideas)
  • Meeting with your leadership mentor at least once a semester
  • Completing at least 10 hours of community service
  • Completing the Tier II reflection questions and submitting on Moodle

Tier III: Leading for Change

The purpose of Tier III is to allow students the opportunity to apply and synthesize what they have learned during Tiers I and II by continuing to engage in enriched leadership experiences. By the end of Tier III, you will be fully engaged in positive, social change for the betterment of yourself, others, and your communities. Upon completion of Tier III, students will earn the distinction of being a Cannon Leader.

Tier III requirements include:

  • Attending the Immunity to Change workshop
  • Completing the Attentional and Interpersonal Style (TAIS) Inventory
  • Attending the TAIS workshop
  • Attending the Cross Cultural Leadership workshop
  • Attending a Leadership ELR Meeting or meet with Director of the Center for Leadership, to begin the ELR process (if elected to complete the Leadership ELR Workbook)
  • Meeting with your leadership mentor at least once a semester
  • Completing at least 10 hours of community service
  • Completing at least two Enriched Leadership Experiences, which consists of either option below:
  • Preparing and presenting a LEAD Program Capstone Presentation
