How long has the LEAD Program been in existence?
The Leadership Education and Development Program, also known as the LEAD Program, was launched in Fall 2012. Unlike other leadership programs, the LEAD Program is a self-paced, three tiered program, allowing students to work on their leadership development when they are ready. Rather than provide all students the same leadership program at the same time, the LEAD Program is ready for you when you are!
How many Elon students participate in the LEAD Program?
There are approximately 400+ Elon students actively participating in the LEAD Program, making it the largest leadership program on campus!
Who presents the LEAD Program workshops?
The LEAD Program workshops are presented by Elon faculty and staff members that work in different departments around campus. These presenters have been selected due to their dynamic presentation skills, their passion for leadership education, and their commitment to helping students succeed.
Who coordinates the LEAD Program?
The LEAD Program is coordinator by a team of five students who facilitate all aspects and components of the LEAD Program. Dana Carnes, the Associate Director of the Center for Leadership, oversees the LEAD Program. Our LEAD Program Student Directors are:

Is the LEAD Program an academic program? I noticed I have received “grades” on Moodle?
The LEAD Program is a co-curricular program intended to compliment your academic experience. Because Moodle is primarily used for academic means, you receive a “grade” of “100” when you complete a LEAD Program component. Although you receive 100 percent, you are not graded in the LEAD Program.
What counts towards the 10 hour service requirement for each LEAD Program tier?
The Center for Leadership recognizes two types of service, Direct and Indirect. Direct service is the actual action of performing community service. For example, going to a food bank and passing out or boxing food. Indirect service is when you work on a planning committee or with a group to implement service. For example, working as a Alternative Break Experience Leader or on the Elonthon Committee. While philanthropy events are great ways to give back to the community these events do not count towards LEAD service requirements (e.g., participating in ELONTHON, Relay for Life, etc). Will the community service that I have completed for my other organizations/classes count for the LEAD Program?
Yes! On Moodle, there is a Service Hours Submission link that allows you to fill out the specifics of your community service activity. In the LEAD Program, we not only want you to engage in community service, but we want you to reflect on how service has had an impact on your leadership skills, styles, and abilities.
Is there specific attire required for LEAD Program events/workshops?
There is no specific attire required for LEAD Program workshops. However, for Fall’s Opening Ceremony and Spring’s Cannon Celebration, business casual attire is strongly encouraged.
Do I have to bring anything to the workshops?
Unless you receive an email asking you to complete a specific inventory beforehand (e.g., StrengthsQuest), then you do not need to bring any materials other than a writing utensil.
Do I have to complete all of the workshops in order?
No you do not! The only requirement is that you attend all the workshops for your specific tier before moving on. For example, if you are in Tier I, you must complete all Tier I workshops before moving on to Tier II.
Do I need to complete all tier requirements before moving on to the next tier?
Yes, while we recognize that schedules can be busy it is required that you complete all tier requirements prior to moving to the next tier. A major feature of the LEAD Program is that it is a self-paced experience; because of this, we offer our participants the same opportunities to attend our workshops and retreats during both semesters of the academic year. What other programs does the Center for Leadership offer?
The Center for Leadership offers a wide variety of programs for students. These programs range from co-curricular opportunities to extracurricular experiences. A few examples of our programs include the Isabella Cannon Leadership Fellows, Student Organization Development, the Leadership Studies minor, and the Leadership ELR. Tier I Questions
Typically, how long should it take me to complete Tier I?
Because the LEAD Program is self-paced, there is not a specific timeline for when you must complete Tier I. However, students typically complete Tier I in one or two semesters and then move on to Tier II.
I am having trouble determining my leadership mentor...can you help?
Yes! In order to identify a leadership mentor, think of different professors, organization advisors, or staff members whom you have enjoyed working with and would like to get to know better. Then, contact them asking if they would be willing to meet once or twice a semester to discuss your progress and growth in the LEAD Program. There are additional resources on Moodle and our website outlining the role and responsibilities of a leadership mentor that you can share with him or her as well. Once you have identified and met with your leadership mentor, provide their name on Moodle and fill out a Leadership Mentor Reflection!
How do I know when I have finished Tier I?
Tier I completion is recognized when participants have completed all requirements and submitted their final culminating reflections on Moodle. Once completed, you will receive an email congratulating you on completing Tier I and welcoming you to Tier II! In May, the Center for Leadership congratulates all LEAD Program participants who have completed a tier at our annual Cannon Celebration.
Tier II Questions
Typically, how long should it take me to complete Tier II?
Because the LEAD Program is self-paced, there is not a specific timeline for when you must complete Tier II. However, students typically complete Tier II in two semesters and then move on to Tier III.
What are Social Perspective Taking Events?
Social perspective taking events focus on deepening your understanding of others and learning the valuable skill of seeing beyond yourself and appreciating peoples’ differences. Elon’s Cultural Calendar is a great resource to find and discover Social Perspective Taking Events. These events are offered throughout the school year by various offices and organizations, including the Center for Leadership, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, the Center for Race, Ethnicity, and Diversity Education, and the Gender and LGBTQIA Center.
I noticed there is a retreat as part of Tier II - do I have to attend the entire retreat?
The retreat is a great opportunity to further develop leadership abilities over the course of a longer period of time. We ask that students attend and stay for the full duration of the retreat because there are a number of activities that significantly impact your retreat experience. The Tier II Retreat is a day experience from approximately 8:00am-5:00pm. The next Tier II Retreat will be offered Sunday, February 26, 2017. Tier II completion is recognized when participants have completed all requirements and submitted their blog on Moodle. Once your blog has been reviewed, you will receive an email congratulating you on completing Tier II and welcoming you to Tier III! In May, the Center for Leadership congratulates all LEAD Program participants who have completed a tier at our annual Cannon Celebration. Tier II members receive their Leadership Certificate at this event.
Tier III Questions
Typically, how long should it take me to complete Tier III?
Because the LEAD Program is self-paced, there is not a specific timeline for when you must complete Tier III. However, students typically complete Tier III in at least two semesters.
How can I complete the Leadership ELR?
You can complete an Experiential Learning Requirement through two pathways: 1) a Common Good Project or 2) completing the Leadership ELR workbook. Completing the Common Good Project or Leadership ELR workbook allows student leaders to proactively and intentionally think about their leadership capacities and how to tailor their practice of leadership to what the organization needs. The Common Good Project should take about two semesters in length to complete; the Leadership ELR workbook can be completed in one semester. To begin the Leadership ELR workbook process, contact the Center for Leadership. Students who complete Tier III will receive at least one Leadership ELR credit.
What is a Common Good Project?
A Common Good Project is a culminating venture that is designed around implementing all skills learned from the LEAD Program in an effort to leave a legacy on Elon’s campus and/or the surrounding community through positive, social change for the common good. Past projects have included redesigning the organizational structure of campus organizations, creating on-campus conferences to educate students on various topics, and creating non-profit organizations to support Alamance County. As a result of completing the Common Good Project, you will recieve a Leadership ELR.
It is up to the Tier III member to select their Common Good Project. You will meet the LEAD Program Tier III Director to provide updates and receive support. If you have further questions please email the LEAD Team.
How do I complete Tier III?
The LEAD Program Capstone Presentation is your final requirement for Tier III. This presentation highlights your progression through each tier of the LEAD Program and your Tier III Enriched Leadership Experiences. This is a great opportunity for you to showcase what you have learned and accomplished for your leadership mentor, the LEAD Team, and the Center for Leadership professional staff.
