About Us

The NC Local News Workshop hosted NC Elections Prep: Focus on Democracy, an August 2022 workshop for North Carolina journalists and media members in preparation for the fall 2022 general election. Among those in attendance were (from left) Jack Hagel, state government editor at WRAL; Lynn Bonner, investigative reporter for Policy Watch; Antionette Kerr, syndicated journalist; and Jordan Schrader, state government editor at The News & Observer.

The NC Local News Workshop was established in June 2020 as a response to the local news crisis in our state, especially the loss of local journalists and news outlets, and also to support transformative approaches to informing North Carolina residents on public affairs and civic issues.

The NC Local News Workshop is housed at the Elon University School of Communications and is being led through its launch period by Melanie Sill, a journalism veteran, and former news executive. The initiative is funded by the NC Local News Lab Fund at the NC Community Foundation.

Rochelle Ford, dean of the School of Communications, and Lizzy Hazeltine, fund coordinator for the NC Local News Lab Fund,  outlined the Workshop’s launch during the Center for Cooperative Media’s Collaborative Journalism Virtual Summit.
