Act-Belong-Commit
In August 2019, President Book announced that Elon had adopted Act-Belong-Commit (ABC) as a framework to promote a culture of holistic well-being and positive mental health, following a recommendation from the Student Wellness and Well-Being Workgroup. ABC, which was developed in Western Australia more than a decade ago and has since been implemented in countries around the world, helps to foster mentally healthy communities through three simple tenets:

  • Act (do something): engage in activities that keep you mentally, physically, and spiritually healthy

  • Belong (do something with someone): develop a strong support network by joining (just a couple) clubs, organizations, or cohorts that you can become deeply engaged with

  • Commit (do something that matters): do things that help you develop a sense of meaning and purpose, and inspire you to contribute to the health of your community.

Act-Belong-Commit provides an easy-to-understand framework to help students engage in meaningful activities that keep them mentally healthy and set them up for success in and out of the classroom while developing behaviors that will benefit them throughout their lives. More information about ABC and how it is being implemented on campus can be found on the ABC website. You can also contact Dr. Caroline Ketcham, chair and professor of exercise science, or Larry Mellinger, director of campus recreation and wellness, with any questions or comments.

The day will begin with the 8:45 a.m. ceremony on Scott Plaza that includes an academic processional, the Commencement address, and the President’s charge to the Class of 2020. The Census
A pillar of Elon’s mission is to prepare civically engaged graduates who are connected to their communities and neighbors, and who are invested in the democratic process. Beginning in mid-March, the U.S. Census Bureau will begin communicating with households about the importance of Census 2020 and how to participate in the count this year. For those students living in university-owned housing, the university will use approved administrative records to help ensure all on-campus students are counted. Those students living off-campus will receive notifications from the U.S. Census Bureau by mail about how to participate in the count and we are encouraging students to keep an eye out for those communications. For more information visit: www.elon.edu/u/census.
