An Elon experience with the Kernodle Center

Elon students are active and engaged, both in and out of the classroom. The Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement is a wonderful place for students to explore leadership development, learn ways to engage in their communities, and discuss difficult social issues. Each year, the Kernodle Center hires over 140 student leaders to plan and implement programs that reach over 3,000 students annually. Leading your peers in service is a great way to learn skills that are useful regardless of career path or major. Students are welcome to stop by the office to learn more about any of the opportunities. Involvement with the Kernodle Center satisfies one of the five Elon Experiences and is included on the Visual Experiential Transcript.

Intersect conference

Intersect is a two-day conference that provides an unprecedented look at the disciplines of diversity, leadership and the cross-sections of the two. Participants engage in dialogue and reflection through keynote speakers, educational sessions and round table discussions. The conference pillars work to inspire participants to create positive change for the common good in their organizations and communities. The 2017 Intersect keynote speaker is Kat Blaque, an animator, illustrator, and YouTuber. Blaque has been openly sharing her life, which she playfully refers to as an "intersectionality salad," as she embodies various identities and experiences. Intersect will be held Nov. 10-11 and is FREE for Elon students.

Life after Elon

The Student Professional Development Center (SPDC) has had a very busy fall semester. More than 1,000 students and 100 employers attended the Beta Alpha Psi Meet and Greet, Sales Meet and Greet, and Job and Internship Expo. On Nov. 7th, the SPDC will host the Social Impact Fair. There, students can speak with representatives from a variety of organizations working to make the world a better place. Students will have the chance to learn about domestic and global internships or fellowships, full-time employment opportunities, and short-term post-graduate service experiences. Throughout this semester career advisors have been busy working with students to help them secure internships and full-time employment, as well as helping with graduate school applications. Students are encouraged to make a one-on-one appointment with an advisor or stop by for career advising during drop-in hours.

Health related absences

As fall weather arrives in North Carolina, we begin to see an increase in seasonal allergies, sinus infections, colds, etc. Students who become ill and are unable to attend class should email their professors as soon as possible, typically before the missed class, in order to notify professors of the reason for absence and begin a conversation about missed coursework. Each academic department determines policies and procedures for missed classes and coursework. Information is included on each course syllabus. Please visit the Academic Catalog to read the university statement on attendance. If a student is hospitalized and unable to communicate on their own behalf, please contact studentconcerns@elon.edu.
