Letter from the Parents Council co-presidents

Elon families,

On behalf of the Parents Council, we would like to extend a warm “Elon welcome” to all new families! You have become members of a very special family. Elon is a unique place where students, faculty and staff work together to further student education, personal development and success.

Parents also play a vital role in this special learning community and, likewise, in Elon’s overall growth and success. Recognizing this importance, the Elon University Parents Council represents the parent body to the university administration and provides parents with a means to share observations, suggestions or concerns about university programs and student life. Please contact us or any member of the council through the Office of Parent Engagement for assistance. We wish you and your students a most successful year at Elon!

Warm regards,
Bill and Kristy Woolfolk P’17

Class of 2020: Are You Ready?

The Are You Ready website is full of information, deadlines and requirements for your student to begin their Elon experience. So you are aware, housing assignments and fall class schedules will be released to students July 27. In addition, the last Are You Ready live webcast for first-year students and transfers is scheduled for Aug. 3. The final live webchat is scheduled for Aug. 9.

Please encourage your student to check the site often, review deadlines, participate in the live chats and check their Elon email account frequently. You can also review information specific to parents and families and see frequently asked questions on the new student and transition program website.

The Elon Experiences

In May, the university released to all graduating seniors a new digital visualization of their Elon Experiences Transcript. The Visual Experiential Transcript captures students' achievements within the five Elon Experiences—global engagement, service, leadership, internships and undergraduate research. The Visual Experiential Transcript allows students to present their experiences to potential employers and graduate schools in an accessible and aesthetically pleasing medium and will help students synthesize their overall collegiate experience and share their Elon story.

In the next editions of this newsletter, we’ll highlight one of the five Elon Experiences and what it means for Elon students.

Notes from the Student Professional Development Center

The Student Professional Development Center (SPDC) is open all summer! Career advisers are always happy to schedule in-person, virtual or phone advising sessions. In addition, if your student is doing an internship this summer, click below for some friendly reminders for them. For our new Elon families, the SPDC assists students and alumni in understanding their career-related interests, individual preferences, strengths and values. They also assist students in understanding how to conduct an effective internship, job or graduate program search, for the ultimate purpose of pursuing meaningful careers over a lifetime. As a parent, you can partner with the SPDC, too, by providing internships and jobs at your company.

Elon Dining and Mail Services

Elon Dining meal plans allow for the ultimate value, convenience and flexibility. All Access grants unlimited swipes to our three all-you-care-to-eat residential dining halls. Our Meal Exchange program gives added variety at any of our 12 retail locations. There's something for everyone with Elon Dining.

Elon University Mail Services is located on the first floor of the Moseley Center. All new students will be assigned a mailbox by the start of fall semester. Mailbox assignments can be obtained by accessing OnTrack. Students should check their accounts regularly as we update the information frequently during this time. All new Elon students will receive email notifications when they receive mail or a package. These items may be picked up at Mail Services during business hours.

News from Barnes & Noble at Elon University

Beginning this fall, Barnes & Noble at Elon University will introduce a Price Match Program to help keep the price of academic textbooks down. They will match the advertised prices on academic textbooks offered from local bookstores and online retailers Amazon, Chegg and Third party resellers and marketplace sellers (e.g. other sellers on Amazon or peer-to-peer pricing) will be excluded.

Student Involvement

Elon students are encouraged to explore opportunities outside of the classroom to supplement their learning and development inside the classroom. Through Student Involvement, students are exposed to the various clubs and organizations that Elon offers. There are other avenues to get involved, as well, depending on the experience your student is looking for.

Elon Athletics

As a member of the Colonial Athletic Association, Elon competes with schools in the Southeast, mid-Atlantic and Northeast in cities that many of our students, alumni and parents call home.

Elon has more than 350 student-athletes in 17 Division I varsity sports. Athletic matches for 2016-17 will begin with men’s and women’s soccer exhibition matches on Aug. 13. All programs are supported by Phoenix Club donors, who assist in providing the scholarships, sports endowments and capital projects that help Elon student-athletes remain successful on the field and in the classroom.

Elon Votes!

As part of Elon's mission to "prepare students to be global citizens and informed leaders," we hope to make voting as accessible as possible for our students. To this end, we have assembled resources in a central location. We have partnered with TurboVote to aid in easy voter registration and provide convenient absentee ballots, regardless of the state where a student claims residency.
