Rodney Parks is the University Registrar, Assistant Vice President and also doubles as a year-round Assistant Professor. He teaches an abundance of different classes like COR*331* Wilderness/Adventure Therapy, HSS*172* Grief and Loss With Children, SOC*373* Sociology of Suicide, HSS*371* Counseling with A.I., and more. He has been teaching Elon summer courses for seven years now and expresses that he has continuously had positive experiences. He explained how teaching different classes, and being here full time, gives professors the opportunity to develop new content and more material. Last year, Dr. Parks developed a class called counseling with artificial intelligence and got great feedback from students. It included a lot of very hypothetical, theoretical elements about what the future might look like in regards to counseling. Students found it to be really interesting and slightly scary about what the future could hold for all of us.

Dr. Parks structures his classes in an asynchronous method. Using a lot of articles, videos, real-life case studies, and completing forums, he’s found it helpful for students to learn with different mediums. If it’s an experiential course sometimes he will have them complete tasks and videotape themselves. With students all over the world, teaching things asynchronously makes it easier to learn in a less formal learning style. Every day is basically a week of class, so while the content may feel heavy sometimes, if students can structure their time so that they

don’t get behind, the content is very manageable and intriguing. It’s information that individuals can explore both in the literature and also personally. Teaching wise, Parks expressed that he’s not big on standardized testing so everything taught is very reflective in nature. There are a lot of written assignments to allow the student to build in their values and beliefs into responses. Dr. Parks believes that once students look at all the benefits and savings, Elon Summer is a great option for everyone.
