Connecting Service with Academics
Academic Service-Learning (ASL) helps students gain a better understanding of course content by putting it into practice. Service-learning engages students in real-life settings, working on community issues to connect classroom learning with societal issues. An effective service-learning course involves students in a meaningful community project combined with reflection to process the learning gained from field experience.
There are many ASL courses offered each semester in a variety of departments. Interested in learning more about ASL? Visit the ASL website.
Service Learning and Civic Engagement Research Guide
The Service Learning and Civic Engagement Research Guide is a resource developed by the Belk Library for students, faculty, and staff to use to gain a deeper understanding of the communities we serve in service-learning and civic engagement initiatives. In the guide you can find suggested research resources for three types of information: social issues, the organizations addressing these issues, and community demographics at the county, state, and national level. There is also a built-in feedback mechanism through which you can suggest other resources to be included on the guide.
