Hindu Life at Elon

The Elon University community and the Truitt Center for Religious & Spiritual Life are committed to promoting an understanding and awareness of the Hindu religion. Through events, services, and forums, Elon enables Hindu students to engage with their religious tradition, and for others on campus to interact with Hindus as well. We provide space on campus for students to discover Hindu traditions, cultures, and beliefs while engaging directly with one another. Read Frequently Asked Questions about Hindu Life at Elon.

The progress of Elon’s commitment to a growing diverse population and its support for all students can be seen through the Registrar’s Report.

Past Events

Diwali: The annual Hindu tradition of Diwali celebrates the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness. Hindus across the world celebrate Diwali in honor of the return of Lord Rama, his wife Sita, and his brother Lakshman from exile of 14 years after Rama defeated Ravana. To honor the return of Lord Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana from Lanka and to illuminate their path, villagers light diyas (lamps) to celebrate the triumph of good over evil. Every year students, faculty and members of the surrounding community celebrate the occasion with festivities under twinkling lights in the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life. During this event students and staff give presentations and traditional foods are offered and enjoyed.

Holi Celebration: The annual Hindu tradition of Holi celebrates the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil. It is also known as the festival of colors. After throwing colored powders on the quad, the celebration continues with an Indian Shabbat dinner at Numen Lumen Pavilion.

International Education Week: International Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and global exchange. Many different activities are hosted throughout the week, like dancing classes, cooking classes, information sessions, panel discussions, and seminars.

Winterfaith Luncheon Hinduism: Every Wednesday in Winter Term the Elon Community Church invites members of a faith community to share their beliefs during a community lunch. The first Luncheon during the Winter Term of 2017 was about Hinduism. Lunch was provided for students, faculty/staff, and community members.
