The Design Thinking Studio in Social Innovation

Is your junior or senior looking for an experience that blends academics with community service and professional skill-building? The Design Thinking Studio is a full four-course immersive semester program that will teach students the design thinking process. These skills will be used in collaboration with peers, interdisciplinary faculty and members of the Alamance County Wellness Collaborative to effect real social change.

Elon Votes!

In the summer edition of this newsletter, we introduced Elon Votes! This initiative helps to fulfill Elon's mission to "prepare students to be global citizens and informed leaders." We hope that students were able to take advantage of this wonderful resource to impact this nation's future and continue to do so up until Nov. 8. The Elon Votes! website is full of resources for students on the presidential candidates and election process. There will be a watch party on election night for all Elon students and community members in the Great Hall in Global Commons.

An Elon experience with the Kernodle Center

Elon students are active and engaged, both in and out of the classroom. The Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement is a wonderful place for students to explore leadership development, learn ways to engage in their communities and discuss difficult social issues. Each year, the Kernodle Center hires over 140 student leaders to plan and implement programs that reach over 3,000 students annually. Leading your peers in service is a great way to learn skills that are useful regardless of career path or major. Students are welcome to contact us or stop by the office to learn more about any of our opportunities. Involvement with the Kernodle Center satisfies one of the five Elon Experiences and is included on the Visual Experiential Transcript.

Fraternity and Sorority Life

With over 250 student organizations at Elon, being a part of a fraternity or sorority is yet another way to be involved in the overall campus community. Fraternity & Sorority Life staff work with our registered fraternities, sororities, honor societies and governing councils to positively impact local and international communities. The formal membership recruitment and processes occur in the spring. Eligibility requirements can be found online.

Health and Wellness

Thanksgiving break and winter break are coming up! By helping schedule medical appointments for your student during the break, you reduce their missed time on campus.

In the meantime, students can schedule appointments to be seen by a licensed medical professional at the on-campus clinic, the R.N. Ellington Center. Elon's Office of Student Health and Wellness also offers health education events throughout the academic year, private counseling sessions that are available through Counseling Services, and Campus Recreation which offers many opportunities to exercise in individual or group settings.

Global Education at Elon

The Isabella Cannon Global Education Center (GEC) celebrates a banner year with new records for international student enrollment, global engagement and scholarship support totaling more than $600,000 in need-based support for 2016-2017 global engagement programs. Students looking to participate in any of the global education opportunities should take note of the upcoming application deadlines.

Study USA, including the new summer Elon in San Francisco program, and Study Abroad programs are accepting applications for summer and fall 2017 until Nov. 17. Winter Term 2018 programs will be available for preview starting Feb. 28, 2017.

Dining events on campus

Elon Dining has a lot in store for the coming weeks! From Vegan and Vegetarian Awareness Week and the 5 for 1 Food Drive to the traditional Thanksgiving meal and weekly dietitian events, there's always something exciting happening in dining.

The Class of 2020

New Student & Transition Programs welcomed over 1,500 new students to the university in August, making the Class of 2020 Elon's largest and most diverse class to date. Some first-year students took advantage of the Elon Gap Experience and have arrived in Alicante, Spain for the last portion of their experience.

Final exams

Fall semester final exams are Dec. 12-16. Be sure that you and your student are aware of the final examination schedule (click on "Exam Schedules" for a complete list of times and dates) and policies for travel and planning purposes.

Life after Elon

The Student Professional Development Center (SPDC) has had a very busy fall semester with three major recruiting events during September such as the Job and Internship Expo. The expo drew over 90 organizations to Elon and over 1,000 students representing all academic years and a myriad of majors. Transition Strategies (COE 310) courses are available to Elon students. These courses help guide students in making decisions about careers, preparing to find internships and jobs, applying to graduate school and more as they transition to life beyond Elon. Courses are one-credit electives with themes geared toward majors or career paths while other courses emphasize professional development topics. Encourage your student to take advantage of Elon's outstanding career services and make an appointment for career advising, register for a Transition Strategies course and attend an upcoming career event. It's never too early to begin planning for life after Elon!

Commencement for the Class of 2017

The 127th Commencement Exercises will take place on Saturday, May 20, 2017 on Scott Plaza in front of Alamance building. Tickets are not required for the outdoor ceremony. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
