Brief Biography
Chip Newton began playing guitar at the age of 12. First learning blues and rock songs, he also learned to play some classical and jazz by ear from his mothers' record collection. He formally studied at Concord University (Athens, W.V.) and while there, was nominated in 1995 as a Yamaha Young Performing Artist, an international contest that recognizes talented up-and-coming performers. Further classical studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro followed and he earned his M.M. in Performance from this institution. He now heads the guitar department at Elon University in North Carolina. Jazz music has also figured prominently in his career and he was featured as a member of the Dave Fox Group on their recording "If These Songs Could Talk," released in 2007. This recording received numerous favorable reviews, the most important among them being New York's "All About Jazz."
