    Domestic Art
I have been interested in making art about domestic life for a number of years.
It is as though this element of our existence is so common we can’t bear to address it
in art without focusing on only the beautiful or sentimental. You see this in 19th and
20th century depictions of home and family. They seem to often depict soft focus
scenes of children playing on beaches. I in contrast, found myself struggling with a
child in deep water, torn between her desire for freedom and my need to keep her
    safe.
As a parent of two daughters I quickly realized this is work that is not for the faint of
heart. It is not the tender scenes of mother and child. Parenting children includes
struggles of control, influence, learning, and nurture. My home is chaotic, messy and
decidedly unromantic. My paintings  reference a modern world of electronic
distractions, inappropriate choices and carpool drop off.
My daughters are now pre-teens. I continue to mine this rich subject for an
unsentimental view of puberty, femininity, and the issues of growing up.
This series of paintings will continue to document my observations about the many
transitions in the life of my family.
