Magnetic Hyperthermia

Heating in magnetic nanoparticle composites; the influence of interparticle interactions in concentrated nanoparticle ensembles; the effect of self-assembled nanoparticle chains on magnetic heating

 

Magnetic Microspheres

Synthesis of high-permeability magnetic microspheres; chemical functionalization for ligand targeting; hyperthermia for ablation of bacterial biofilms; magnetically-stimulated delivery of encapsulated pharmaceuticals

 

Biomimetic Cilia

Synthesis of artificial magnetic ciliary system; analytical modeling of cilia dynamics; induced fluid flow for pumping and mixing in low-Reynolds systems; cilia arrays for manipulation of light and small particles

 

Soft Robotics

Self-assembled chains of magnetic particles in polymer films; numerical modeling of magnetic deformation of shape-memory magnetic polymers; measurements of magnetic torque in chained magnetic polymer composites and design and construction of experimental tools

 

Magnetic Swimmers

Microscale magnetic swimmers for low-Reynolds systems; analytical modeling

Current Projects

I am primarily interested in the application of nano- and microscale techniques to explore questions of biological interest. My current work is in the development of novel magnetic polymers for a variety of biomedical applications, ranging from sensors and actuators to cancer therapeutics. Specific interests include:
