Research

The students working in my research lab are involved with projects typically related to enzymatic mechanisms, peptide aggregations and their relationship to neurological dysfunction, and oxidative stress mechanisms.  Recent projects have included (1) examining enzyme inhibitors for acetylcholinesterase, an integral enzyme in the manifestation of Alzheimer's disease symptoms, (2) amyloid beta and alpha synuclein aggregates, short peptides that when aggregated cause cellular anomalies that can lead to Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease, and (3) the oxidative mechanism of myeloperoxidase and lactoperoxidase, two enzymes integrally involved with biochemical pathways for immunological defense.

Current Projects

1. The interaction of oxidized hormones with DNA in the presence of peroxidase enzymes

2. The oxidative effect of amyloid beta oligomers on lipids and proteins

3. Stabilization of small peptide oligomers with small phenolic molecules and neurotransmitters.
