Brief Biography

Thomas Nelson began his professional career as a television news reporter at various small to medium televsion markets across the United States.  He also worked as a freelance television news reporter for a time during the early to mid 1990s while he was lving in Germany.  Tom's primary job during his half-decade in Germany was as a professor for the University of Maryland's European branch where he taught mostly American and British military service people.  Tom arrived at Elon in 1996 growing along with the communications department into the School of Communications and with the college into Elon University. Since his arrival Tom has produced two documentaries that received international recognition from the Broadcast Education Association.  Tom has led numerous overseas learning trips focused on the First World War and was a professor in residence for Elon's Florence, Italy semster abroad program.

Education

Thomas Nelson is a graduate of Boston College where he studied history with a BA program and of Syracuse University where he studied Radio/Television and Film with a MS program.

Employment History

Tom was a television news anchor and reporter at small and medium market television stations across the United States and had a stint as a freelancer reporter for Deutsche Welle TV in Germany during the early 1990s.  Interlaced with that TV career, Tom was a university teacher at several small institutions around the US before finally settling at Elon in 1996.

Courses Taught

Thomas Nelson teaches across the university as a GST professor and of course within the School of Communications as a speech, writing and visual communication educator.

Research

Tom has produced two documentaries recognized as award winning work by the Broadcast Education Association.  The first documentary is "Prisoners of Plenty" focused on German military prisoners of war held at a camp in Kansas during the Second World War.  The second documentary is "The Story of Marion Ellet" focused on a Kansas journalist of note. 

Current Projects

Jeannette Rankin was the first woman to hold elected office at the federal level as a member of the US House from Montana in 1916.  Rankin voted against the entry of the US into World War One.  The letters she received from her constituents and others are the focus of Tom's current research.

Grants Awarded

Tom is consistently granted summer research money by his own School of Communications that is used to fund documentaries and papers presented to various groups as well as to the Broadcast Education Association.

Awards

Thomas Nelson received a spot in the Kansas City International Film Festival (2011) for a documentary focused on German military prisoners of war held in a Kansas POW camp during World War Two. Tom also received local film festival award recognition in Kansas (2013) as well as national award recognition for a documentary focused on a Kansas journalist of note.
