Winter Fly-in

COM 570. Interactive Project for the Public Good
Students work in a team environment to create an interactive media project for the public good. In teams, they travel for approximately a week to a site to gather content through interviews, photos, audio and video needed for the project. They then return to campus to organize this content into a project that will becomes accessible to the public at large. Students develop, design and deploy original interactive projects in a deadline-driven setting.

January is different at Elon. Interactive Media graduate students spend the month working on a team project for the public good, which includes a domestic or international trip to collect audio and video content.

During Winter Term, students have worked in the United Kingdom, Costa Rica, Mexico, Iceland and Panama. Interactive content and websites are produced to help nonprofit organizations build community recognition, increase volunteer efforts and boost fundraising.

The Project for the Public good was just that, an opportunity to work on something that will make a difference. Seeing the overwhelming beauty of Costa Rica and the danger poor waste management posed to it, made our project that much more meaningful.

You're in paradise with classmates working on a socially responsible project. You get great experience and insight into the life cycle of a project, working with a client and working in a team. It's satisfying to use the skills you learned in the Fall semester and push yourself further than you would have thought you could go. Traveling, being a tourist, getting to know people in a new country, working for a valuable cause and having a final product you're proud of makes the fly-ins one of the most rewarding experiences of the iMedia program.

At the top of my list of pros as to why I should attend Elon was the fly-in trip. From the travel experience, to the team work experience, to the real world project experience... I simply couldn't imagine a better way to combine all of the skills I was to learn. Being close to the equator in January didn't hurt either!

Can I go back? One of the richest experiences of my life. Never has getting so little sleep been so energizing.
