Enriching Experiences Beyond the Classroom...What minors are saying

Internships:
"I have been able to have so many incredible internships because of my W/GS minor, but I think the most amazing was serving as a public policy intern for the National Organization for Women (NOW) over this past summer. I worked mainly on the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). I was to attend a hearing at the Senate Judiciary Committee concerning the reauthorization of VAWA. Through NOW, along with the 22 other interns I attended protest rallies at the U.S. Supreme Court the day after Judge Roberts was announced as President Bush's U..S Supreme Court nominee. I believe you won't regret registering as a W/GS minor."

Research:
"I completed a research project on African Feminist Theology during my REL 292 (Approaches to the Study of Religion) class with Dr. Jeffrey Pugh this past spring. This will serve as the foundation for my Honors thesis. The research paper analyzed three aspects of African women's theology: hermeneutics (interpreting scripture), Christology, and the importance of tradition and ritual."

"I am currently working with Anne Bolin on research about Elon's non-discrimination policies and how they can be improved. The work focuses mainly on the inclusion of "sexual orientation" as well as "gender identity" within these statements. In addition, we hope to help Elon become a more pro-actively positive place towards the LGBTQ and Gender movements. I am also co-chair of Spectrum, which runs programming in Elon 101 classes as well as Wellness classes, helping to raise awareness on campus. Through Spectrum, I am also able to reach those beyond Elon's walls by speaking to churches and civic groups about my personal journey as a gay Christian."

"I worked with Dr. Heidi G. Frontani this summer on research about settler-colonist and Gikuyu women in Kenya. We looked at individual women's life histories in order to uncover the ideologies which influenced their understandings of human-environment interactions."
