Enriching Life Experiences...What minors are saying

Student studying abroadVolunteer and Service-Learning:
"I've been volunteering with Family Abuse Services in Burlington over this past summer. This is not part of any academic requirement, but something I simply wanted to become involved in because I felt strongly about the cause. It's allowed me to work in an office full of women who are dedicated to eradicating violence against women and their children. It's been an incredible learning experience which has brought depth to my understanding of the W/GS minor."

"I have had the chance to have many great W/GS related experiences. Last year, I acted in the Vagina Monologues, playing a transgender person. I also helped to coordinate a fundraiser for Family Abuse Services last spring with Elon Volunteers! This fall, I am co-authoring a paper with one of my sociology professors and fellow W/GS minors that is for the Association of Humanist Sociologists. This paper will be about how HIV/AIDS in Africa is a feminist issue."

Study Abroad:
"The culture here in Chile is very conservative. Homosexuality basically doesn't exist in an open manner. I thought the U.S. was conservative! Anyway, I'm keeping a diary of my observations for possible future work. In terms of scholarly work, I am planning on writing a voluntary senior thesis for my independent major in women's/gender studies. I have yet to determine what my topic will be, but I will be working with Ann Cahill on this. I also have the possibility of presenting at a national men's studies association yearly conference...I've been invited to submit work to be reviewed with the possibility of presenting...I plan on doing a lot of scholarly work in this area in the future because I want to get an M.A. and Ph.D. in it so that I can teach at the post-secondary level."
