SPN 335/GST 401: Latinos in the U.S.

Students in this course engaged in 15 hours of service to the local Latino community as required. They also kept a journal about how the service project related to course content and how course content informed their service component. For the most part, service placements were arranged through the Kernodle Center for Service Learning, though two placements – with Alamance County Transportation Authority and North Carolina Missions of Mercy Free Dental Clinic – were arranged through outside contacts. Most of the students worked with ESL adult learners, pre-K and elementary school students, and at Cummings High School. Duties included assisting dentists in treating Spanish-speaking patients, serving as a lunch buddy and tutor for elementary school children, assisting recent Spanish-speaking arrivals with their adjustment to U.S. schools, and helping adult ESL learners in their classes.
