Brief Biography

SOLIDARITY | RACE | ADOPTION

Dr. Jae-In Kim is a diversity science teacher, scholar, and mentor.

They teach COR 1100 and PSY courses that cover topics related to adoption, diversity and culture, social psychology, and statistics and research methods.

Their scholarship focuses on identity and solidarity with an emphasis on the experiences of adopted and racially minoritized communities. As an adopted person and a Person of Color, they advocate for the importance of insider research and in recognizing the ways in which all researchers bring bias to their scholarship. Recent student-led project topics include Chinese adoptee identity and mental health and LGBTQ students' experiences, and culminated in presentations at major conferences (SPSP, Div 45) and professional manuscripts.

They received their Ph.D. from University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in personality psychology, where they worked with Dr. Richard M. Lee. Their dissertation focused on Asian American participation in Black collective action (e.g., Black Lives Matter). They received their B.S. from University of Wisconsin-Madison in psychology with a minor in religious studies.

Jae-In was adopted from Korea as an infant and raised by a White family in Minnesota.
