Brief Biography

Tony Reyes, Ph.D., CRC, is an assistant professor of Human Service Studies at Elon University. His teaching and research focus on disability, employment, and the ways human service professionals can support individuals in building meaningful and productive lives.

At Elon, Dr. Reyes teaches courses on counseling practice, human services, and program design and evaluation. His courses emphasize experiential learning and community engagement, often connecting students with local organizations to address real-world social problems through needs assessments, program development, and evaluation.

Dr. Reyes’s research examines psychosocial factors related to disability and employment, including working alliance in vocational rehabilitation counseling, well-being among individuals with disabilities, and employment outcomes among people with chronic health conditions and veterans. His work has been published in journals such as Rehabilitation Counseling Bulletin, Rehabilitation Psychology, Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation, Quality of Life Research, and Frontiers in Education.

In addition to his academic work, Dr. Reyes serves as a vocational economic analyst, providing expert analyses related to earning capacity and work-life expectancy in disability and personal injury cases. He is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor and holds degrees from Yale University, California State University–Los Angeles, the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Courses Taught

HSS 1110 – The Art and Science of Human Service Studies (ELR)
This course introduces students to the history, values, and ethical foundations of the human services profession. Students examine theoretical approaches to helping, issues of social justice, and the role of research and evidence in guiding interventions and public policy designed to address social problems.

HSS 2120 – Counseling Individuals and Families
This course examines theories and methods used in counseling individuals and families. Students develop practical skills in applying counseling theories through case studies, role playing, simulations, and other experiential learning activities.

HSS 4110 – Designing and Assessing Human Services Programs
This course focuses on the planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs within human services organizations. Students learn how to conduct needs assessments, design interventions, develop program resources, and evaluate program effectiveness. The course also examines the roles of staff, volunteers, boards, community partners, and clients in program implementation.

HSS 4985 – Internship in Human Services
This internship provides students with the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills of human service practice in professional settings. Students complete supervised placements in human service agencies and participate in regular conferences with faculty and site supervisors to support professional development and reflective learning.
