Quick answers to what families ask most.

Do not see your question here? Email us at RobertsAcademy@elon.edu and we will get back to you.

Does my child need a formal dyslexia diagnosis to apply?

No. A formal diagnosis is helpful, but it is not required to start the process. Many families who come to us already recognize that their child processes reading differently, but have not yet completed a full evaluation. During the admissions process, we spend time with your child to understand how they learn. That helps us determine whether Roberts Academy is the right fit, with or without a prior diagnosis.

How long will my child attend Roberts Academy?

Most students attend for 2 to 3 years. The goal is not permanent placement. We are building the foundational skills your child needs to return to their home school reading at or near grade level, with the strategies and confidence to keep up on their own. We coordinate with your child’s home school from the start so that transition is planned and supported, not improvised when the time comes.

How many students are in each class?

Each class has a maximum of 12 students. That is a deliberate design decision, not a limitation. In a class of 12, a teacher can track exactly where each child is, catch the moment they lose the thread, and adjust instruction in real time. Most public school classrooms hold 24 to 28 students. For a child with dyslexia who already needs more time and a different approach, that difference matters enormously.

Is financial aid available?

Yes. There are three potential sources of financial support for Roberts Academy families. The NC Opportunity Scholarship is available to NC families based on household income and can cover up to $7,686 in tuition. The NC ESA+ Scholarship is built for children with documented disabilities, including dyslexia, and can cover $9,000 in tuition. Many families use both together. Elon also offers an additional scholarship program for families who still have unmet financial need after exploring both state programs. We walk through all of these options with every family during the admissions process. Email us and we will help you understand exactly what you qualify for.

What grades does Roberts Academy serve?

We are launching with grades 3 and 4 in Fall 2026, with plans to expand to grades 1 through 6 over time. If your child is in a grade we are not yet serving, reach out now. We want to know about your family, and we can help you understand what options are available in the meantime.

When does Roberts Academy open?

Roberts Academy opens for the Fall 2026 school year. We are currently accepting interest forms and reaching out personally to every family who submits one. Spaces are limited to 12 students per class. The earlier you reach out, the more time we have to work through the process together before enrollment closes.

Where exactly is Roberts Academy located?

Roberts Academy is on the Elon University campus in Elon, NC, conveniently located between Greensboro and Burlington off I-40/I-85, and accessible from across the Triad and Triangle regions. We will share specific building details as we get closer to opening. If you have questions about the commute, email us and we will help.

Why is Roberts Academy connected to Elon University?

Roberts Academy is affiliated with Elon University, and that connection directly benefits your child. Our instruction is grounded in current research on how children with dyslexia learn to read. Our teachers are trained and supported by Elon’s education faculty. It also means your child gets to experience a real university campus and be exposed to supportive educational experiences that will impact how they see themselves and what they believe is possible.
