KCSL: Mentors needed for Alamance schools' new mentoring program

Alamance-Burlington School System's Student Support Services is looking for 12-15 mentors for their male mentoring program this spring. This new program is implemented in elementary, middle and high schools in order to decrease school discipline, raise attendance rates, increase motivation and increase the number of males admitted into college universities.

The program does this by bringing in a higher sense of leadership, life skills and academics. It raises student awareness of these subjects in two ways: first, by tutoring and helping students get on track in subjects like mathematics and English, and second, by bringing in speakers and organizations to work with students and expose them to different opportunities, both educational and life skill-oriented.

Program headquarters are located at 1712 Vaughn Road in Burlington. There is no orientation or training required to be a mentor, and the scheduled program meeting times are listed below.

Interested mentors are invited to contact Gian Spells and Lavonte Leak, consultants for the Alamance Burlington School System. Spells can be reached by phone at (919) 744-5628 or email at gianspells@yahoo.com and Gian_spells@abss.k12.nc.us. Leak can be reached at (919) 673-8518 or Lavonte_leak@abss.k12.nc.us.

All Elon students must attend a Title IX training before volunteering in the community. This opportunity also requires a criminal background check.
